Annual Review of Critical Psychology

Annual Review of Critical Psychology (ARCP) is an international peer-reviewed online open-access journal. The first issue in 1999 revolved around the following questions: What are the necessary prerequisites for critical work in different areas of the discipline? What theoretical and methodological resources do we already have at hand for good critical practice? What are the conceptual and institutional foundations for critical psychology?

We were clear in that issue and every issue since then, that to be aware of traps that await psychologists and their allies who want to go critical is not enough, and simple exposés of the rackets that individual psychologists get up to will fail to address the ways in which particular social and historical conditions permit and encourage them. Theory need be no more mysterious than psychology, and those involved in critical psychology will need a good deal of theory to make sense of what is going on around them. The theory we need, however, has to be rooted in the experience of those who suffer psychology and has to be linked to action to change it.

Subsequent issues have been on ‘Action Research’, ‘Anti-Capitalism’, ‘Feminisms and Activisms’, ‘Globalisation, Migration and Asylum’, ‘Lacan and Critical Psychology’, ‘Psychologisation under Scrutiny’, ‘Marxism and Psychology’ and ‘Gender and Sexuality’.

We have had two special issues on varieties of critical psychology from around the world ‘Critical Psychology in a Changing World’ (in 2006) and ‘Critical Psychology in a Changing World: Building Bridges and Expanding Dialogue’ (in 2013). Those special issues visited critical psychological scholarship in places such as Aotearoa-New Zealand, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Cuba, Denmark, Flandern, France, German Speaking countries, Germany, Greece, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latin America, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, Philippines, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Nigeria, South Africa, Turkey, United Kingdom, and USA.
