Tom Bartlett

bartlettTom Bartlett: I am a linguist/discourse analyst seeking my own personal Holy Grail of integrating micro, meso and macroanalysis of text and context within  multistranded and transdiciplinary research projects  in areas of contested power, rights and autonomy.   My doctoral fieldwork began life as an exposé of how the status of national and international development groups enabled them to dominate discourse with the indigenous communities of the North Rupununi Savannah in Guyana but ended up as a consideration of the conditions of possibility for collaboration in which the voice of different participants became integrated and hyridised within specific institutional contexts.  My work since has focused on developing the theoretical and methodological framework that grew from this work and applying it to new contexts.  More specifically, I am interested in (re)uniting the architecture of Systemic Functional Linguistics with broader currents within sociolinguistics, Linguistic Ethnography and Critical Discourse Analysis.   I am currently beginning research on community management and sustainability in island communities.
