Critical research · Inclusion · Strategy · Systems change

Thinking differently about crises, inequality and exclusion.

The Critical Institute is an independent platform for strategic thinking, research and practice working across inclusive development and humanitarian action, social protection, climate risk, forced migration, ethics and emerging technologies with a focus on equitable and transformative impact on the world's most marginalized populations.

About

A home for critical, grounded and uncomfortable thinking.

The Critical Institute works with organisations, governments, researchers, activists and practitioners who want to move beyond token inclusion and towards more honest, ethical and transformative policies, systems and practices.

We bring together an interdisciplinary team working cross-sectorally to examine how actors and institutions understand and respond to crises and hardships— and who remains excluded when systems claim to reach and protect everyone.

Areas of work

What we work on

Inclusion with a focus on intersectional areas

Critical and practical work on inclusion across development, humanitarian action, social protection, global health, education, community systems and AI.

Crises & humanitarian systems

Research and advisory support on inclusive humanitarian action, forced migration, disaster risk, anticipatory action and fragile contexts.

Inclusive AI & technology

Ethical analysis of how AI and emerging technologies can genuinely accommodate poor, marginalised and crisis-affected communities.

Approach

How we think and work

Critical, not cynical

We question dominant systems, fashionable language and institutional habits, while remaining committed to practical change and better outcomes.

Grounded in lived realities

Our work values ethnography, listening, local knowledge and the political complexity of everyday life in crisis-affected and low-resource contexts.

Ethics before innovation

We ask not only what works, but who benefits, who is harmed, who is heard, and what kinds of futures are being built.

Inclusion is not a checklist. It is a confrontation with power.
